With Tinted Glass, the Kunsthalle Münster is presenting Charlott Weise’s first solo exhibition in a German art institution. In her works, the Amsterdam-based artist examines the representation and reproduction of femininity and its performance, issues she explores in various realms such as literature, fashion, (mainstream) media and theatre. At the same time, painting and its rich history offer a crucial starting point for her artistic inquiry. Her practice can be seen as a form of intuitive visual writing through which she reflects on an unconscious inner world composed of relationships, images and obsessions – a terrain in which important roles are played by female archetypes such as Venus, the witch or the vamp. These crop up in mundane as well as stylised explorations, whereby theatricality emerges as a central element of her work, both in the narratives within the individual works and in their spatial mises-en-scène. By detaching the paintings from the walls, viewers are drawn into direct involvement with the installation and the spatial context. Emotional worlds form the framework within which Weise uses humoristic means to transform gender clichés. In abstract as well as figurative representations the artist generates tension between sketchy, brutal and explicitly formulated rendition. This can also be observed in the various materials she uses – whether fluttering, transparent, rigid or solid. She employs make-up, earth pigments or dirt to supplement the conventional media of acrylic or oil paint, transposing the themes of her painting onto a sensual level. Breaking with conventions and connotations, her works compass the boundaries of gender-specific ascriptions. The experience thus created is ambivalent rather than obvious.
