Talk with Mikołaj Sobczak und Merle Radtke

On the occasion of the exhibition Leibeigene, Merle Radtke, Director of Kunsthalle Münster, talks to Mikołaj Sobczak about his artistic work.

In his artwork, he addresses political issues and historical politics, especially the perspective and lives of marginalised subjects. His paintings, drawings, performances, videos and cut-outs raise questions about a new collective culture of identity and memories. Recalling historical events and myths, he expands the narrative patterns of traditional, canonised to instrumentalised history to include moments of emancipation. As an artist, he sees the urgency of narrating lived realities that ground reflection on imperialism and address traumas of the past. If the precondition for peace is memory, then myths and historical simplifications must be abandoned.
