Kathrin Schlegel, Save Our Souls

, 2013

The intervention created by Kathrin Schlegel is intentionally subtle and may only be recognized at second sight. As it is rather surprising that the cross, as a symbol of Christian faith, is preserved to the building, the light sign has a double function: on the one hand it exposes the strikingly gestural effortlessness with which the different and complex identity-conferring systems, which determine cultural socialization in the Western world, intermingle and intertwine. On the other, it restores the sacred appearance of the church by uncovering the hidden religious or mythological symbolism of profane manifestations.
