Rosa Tharrats. Back Ashore: Artist-at-Sea Edition

With We Are Full of Winds and Sea and Solar Threads, the Kunsthalle Münster presented the first solo exhibition by Catalan artist Rosa Tharrats in a German institution. The Kunsthalle became the stage for the immersive installation Vestir el viento (2025), which means “clothing the wind.” A play with the elements that transformed the exhibition space with all its specific qualities into a place of experience, inviting visitors to rethink their relationship to the world and to recognize the inherent value of each element as a constant reminder of the cycles of life.

The initial concept of the installation was developed during Tharrats‘ voyage to the South Sandwich Islands as Artist-at-Sea on the Schmidt Ocean Institute's expedition vessel R/V Falklor (too). Most of the flags on display were created in direct contact with nature, in collaboration with the wind; they were translated into the space in the Kunsthalle and mounted tautly or suspended loosely from the ceiling, surrendering to gravity. In the exhibition, the installation was activated several times by performers who set it in motion with their voices, breathing exercises, and by playing wind instruments.

Since 2015, the Schmidt Ocean Institute has invited artists to join 56 expeditions and explore the deep sea alongside leading marine scientists, supporting cross-disciplinary collaboration between art and science to deepen our understanding of the ocean.

In the kick-off event of the Schmidt Ocean Institute's Artist-at-Sea programme discussion series, artist Rosa Tharrats and marine biologist Dr. Javier Cristobo will provide insight into the various aspects of the expedition to the South Sandwich Islands and their encounter with new species. Together with Merle Radtke, director of the Kunsthalle Münster, they will also look at the works created there by Rosa Tharrats and their presentation in the exhibition at the Kunsthalle Münster.
