Under the heading The Limits of Growth, in 1972 Club of Rome formulated the need for international efforts so as to come to grips with the growing global problems within the next ten years. Otherwise, the point could be reached where “handling them would exceed human capacities.” It has taken 50 more years for this prediction to be fully acknowledged. However the efforts to contain ecological and social trouble-spots are confronted by a growing population worldwide and increasing consumption. Here the building sector is responsible for a good third of the worldwide consumption of energy and resources. But what do the flexible cities look like that have to find responses to social crises and climactic upheavals? How are we to stem persistent land consumption? How are we to shape a future in which renunciation will be considered to be an advantage? On three evenings experts will debate issues and enter into discussion with the audience.
