Crying in Public is the first solo exhibition of the Portuguese artist Pedro Barateiro in a German institution. In his works - including sculptures, drawings, films, texts and performances - he examines the mechanisms and structures of post-capitalist societies. In a variety of ways, he addresses the estrangement of society as well as of the individual from himself that goes hand in hand with capitalism. At a time when the world seems to be increasingly coming apart at the seams, characterised by a lack of orientation and helplessness, causing dissatisfaction and distancing to spread, he explores the question of how we can change the way we relate to each other and to all that surrounds us.
5.7. - 27.8.2023, Off the Pedestals: Iván Argote, Eduardo Chillida, Jenny Holzer, Zauri Matikashvili, Joiri Minaya, Leila Orth, Stadthausgalerie Münster
The start of a programmatic examination of public space or questions of art and the public sphere by the Kunsthalle Münster in the Stadthausgalerie is the exhibition Off the Pedestals, which features works by Iván Argote, Zauri Matikashvili, Joiri Minaya and Leila Orth. In addition, with Eduardo Chillida's work Tolerance through Dialogue (1992), located outside the doors of the Stadthausgalerie on the Platz des Westfälischen Friedens, and Jenny Holzer's Bänken (1987), located in the southern Schlossgarten, two works of art in public space are included in the exhibition and its questions. In terms of content, the exhibition addresses current political and social confrontations with war and colonial monuments, in particular by raising questions about identity politics and remembrance practices in public space and putting them up for discussion. The (artistic) confrontation with such long-repressed questions breaks the silence about past transgressions and invites discussion. The result is a discourse for society as a whole that also brings the city's own history into focus.
