Hannah Moraw: How Do You Seperate (Performance)

For How do you separate?, performers will come together throughout the exhibition to untangle a web of several balls of yarn. Using the metaphor of the tangled thread as a starting point, the project explores processes of separation and untangling. The goal is not to completely separate the individual strands, but rather to create a platform for reflecting on the knots in one’s own life, discussing them, and using this as a basis for forming new connections.

In the preceding Detangling Workshop, which served as part of the research for How do you separate?, the themes of entanglement and untangling were explored over the course of an afternoon through lectures and discussions spanning various disciplines—including contributions on the history of handicrafts, divorce law, untangling techniques, and biographical reflections. The performance builds on a 2022 work in which Moraw reflected on her parents’ separation by untangling two balls of wool.

Visitors are invited to join the performance and assist the group with their task. Once a ball of wool has been freed from the tangle, it may be taken home and reworked.
