[Counter-]Monuments. Memory Practices in Public Space. Prof. Dr. Ursula Frohne talks with Merle Radtke

In the context of the finissage of the exhibition Off the Pedestals, Prof. Dr. Ursula Frohne (University of Münster) will provide an insight into the book project [Counter-]Monuments: Memory Practices in Public Space.

The idea for the publication emerged from a lecture series that took place in 2018 at the LWL Museum of Art and Culture and the University of Münster. This lecture series dealt with memory practices in public space, their connection to monuments and the mechanisms of contemporary aesthetic production.

The last event in the context of our exhibition Off the Pedestals takes up the issues of current political and social debates with war and colonial monuments. In particular, it addresses the related questions of identity politics and memory practices in public space. The basis of the debate consists of reflections and discussions on how we can create memories together in public spaces and how violations can also be made visible. In the process, current debates as well as academic and artistic positions are brought into view and the exhibition space is opened up for further discussions on alternative meanings of monuments.
