The curve is a perspective of the horizon, the end of sight. What we can’t see beyond becomes a line: an acoustic movement swells as we traverse the line, turning into darkness reliably, but nevertheless spectacularly. (Adrian Williams, 2019)

The Preußenstadion, home ground of the third-league football team SC Preußen Münster, was erected by its members in 1926 and long considered as one of Germany’s state-of-the-art football stadiums. During the theatre festival FLURSTÜCKE 2019, it will be the playing field of Adrian Williams’ performance The Curve. The American artist is presenting a performance that departs from and interconnects with the conditions of the stadium in a unique way. For the moment of sunset, the stadium will serve as the setting for an acoustic intervention that William performs together with six musicians, where light and sound merge with the surroundings to create a fascinating interplay – until that astounding moment when the sun disappears on the horizon, slowly drawing all light with it. Williams’ performance alters the framework through which we perceive our environment; leaving out the intense visual stimuli and roaring background noises typical for the stadium provides a space for seeing the supposedly well familiar grounds from a different perspective.

Adrian Williams (b. 1979 in Portland, Oregon; lives and works in Frankfurt am Main) is a storyteller, who intertwines texts with photographs. In her performances, films and installations she examines the shades between image, sound and text, which stir the spectators' imagination and thereby the development of a personal reality. In her performances, she brings together music, texts and sound objects and reflects on the phenomenon of a physical reality that results from a mere tone. After studying at Cooper Union for Science and Art in New York and Städelschule Frankfurt, she participated in exhibitions (among others) at Nassauischen Kunstverein Wiesbaden (2007), the Athens Biennale (2009), Portikus (2011), GAM – Galleria civica d'arte moderna e contemporanea, Turin (2014), MMK Frankfurt (2014) as well as Hamburger Kunsthalle (2014). In 2013 Williams won the renowned ars viva price and her performance „Watering Hole“ was on show at the garden of the Städel Museum Frankfurt. More recently, Williams’ works have been included in group exhibitions at Kunstverein Braunschweig (2018) as well as Kölnischer Kunstverein (2018).
